DIY Sunscreen: SPF the Safe Way...

Have you ever considered the hidden ingredients in sunscreen or considered a Do It Yourself Sunscreen? I hadn't until I was approached by Michelle. She points out the benefits of DIY Sunscreen and the harmful ingredients of the store bought kind. Michelle works at Skana, an upscale spa within the Turning Stone Spa & Casino and today shares an easy recipe for an all natural sunscreen.

DIY sunscreen, safe and natural sunscreen

Go Natural with Sunscreen This Summer

The next time you head to the store to pick up your sunscreen, think twice. Skin cancer is a serious concern to have and wrinkling isn't any fun either. However, commercially produced sunscreens are chock full of chemicals. Some chemicals you should watch out for are: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate. Whether you find three of them on the label or all six, chemical filters do not sound appealing. A good rule of thumb for your body should be to only use products with a natural base. Otherwise, you could regret it.

According to the Environmental Grantmakers Association, oxybenzone should be avoided, and that's only highlighting one of the common chemical filters that are used. At least 80% of the products on the market contain this chemical, yet studies have shown it could have serious ramifications. From affecting the development of a fetus in the womb, to causing damage to a woman's reproductive system or affecting hormone levels.

However there is hope! The experts from Skana spa of the New York resort Turning Stone have shared with us a recipe for a homemade sunscreen that is chemical free and will leave your skin with that summer glow.

What You Need
1/4 Cup Diaper Rash Lotion
1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil
1 Tablespoon Cocoa Butter
1 Tablespoon Aloe Vera
1 Teaspoon Sesame Seed Oil
1 Teaspoon Beeswax

Once you have your ingredients, get a glass bowl and mix them together with a spoon. You then boil a pot of water and rest the bowl on top. The pot should be smaller than the bowl. The ingredients will gradually melt together. Stir thoroughly and allow to cool. Place the mixture in a dry place, such as a cabinet, or in the fridge.

Going with a natural blend is ideal. Diaper rash lotion's zinc oxide keeps skin from being chapped and irritated. Cocoa butter is a wonderful moisturizer, while coconut oil contains powerful anti-oxidants that fight damaging free radicals. Beeswax is a protectant and sesame seed oil has even been known to slow the growth of skin cancer. Aloe vera can reduce inflammation. Put it all together and keep your skin safe the natural way.

When we aim for healthy eating we often times read over the ingredient list. We're told the less ingredients the better and if we can't pronounce the ingredients then it's not as healthy. Michelle draws the same conclusion with our sunscreen choices. I'd love to hear from you if you give this DIY Sunscreen a try!

  3. I love your blog but I have to seriously advise against homemade sunscreen. I'm all about avoiding unneccesary chemicals and I totally support homemade products whenever possible but sunscreen is not one of them.

Don't gamble with your skin, ladies! There is no way to know how much SPF protection you are getting from this mixture. The oils used to make this could actually make sun exposure worse because oil tends to absorb UV light (hence why people use baby oil to "tan") and some affect sensitive skin. Finally, the reason there are multiple chemicals in commercial sunscreen is because the ingredients must protect against different wavelengths of UV light. The zinc oxide will protect you from a certain spectrum of light but not from others - leaving you exposed. Also, I'm not thoroughly convinced that steam heating on a stove will adequately emulsify the mixture.

I don't blame anyone for seeking an alternative - the chemicals in our food & beauty products are scary at times. Remember though you body is extremely adaptable and darn good at removing toxins and things that shouldn't be there.

Seek a dermatologist's opinion before using this or any product!

    1. Killer response!
As much as I support homemade, chemical free solutions I smile ear to ear as I read your comment. People weigh risk differently. I like your spin on this and think you have made very important points!! Michelle's research is thorough but your concerns/advice are equally valid!

  4. I agree with Heather - I like DIY but sunscreen is not something I'd be willing to take risks with.

  7. The recipe is interesting but I am wondering what type of baby diaper rash cream you might use? I don't believe the one I always used (A&D ointment has zinc oxide in it).

Thanks for sharing on A Humble Bumble's Healthy Tuesday's Blog Hop- I hope you will join us again this coming Tuesday!

  9. Nice post. I am looking for the perfect natural sunscreen for my body. I will definitely have to try this recipe. The last recipe I tried made my skin break out (I have very sensitive skin), hopefully this wont do the same. Thanks for sharing!

  10. I'm all about natural options, but I'm not 100% sure I'm sold on natural sunscreen. I burn VERY easily and skin cancer isn't something that I want. Sorry to be negative, I guess I'm just skeptical.

  11. I was just about to comment, but then saw Heather's. I don't know that I would trust my skin to natural sunscreen, either. ESPECIALLY since today, literally like two hours ago, I found out that there is yet ANOTHER cancer risk that goes along with my BRCA2 DNA mutation: MELANOMA.

    HUGE FROWNIE FACE. :( :( :(

So, now more than ever I will be protecting the skin I'm in...probably to the point of being neurotic.

I think this does sound like an AWESOME moisturizer, though, for when spending time out in the sun, for maybe after...minus the diaper cream maybe??? It sounds like it would smell AMAZING!!!
